A portrait session with John Singer Sargent
13 November 2020
Join Lizet Dingemans from Raw Umber Studios in this hour-long portrait drawing session. Rather than using a live model, we'll be drawing from paintings by John Singer Sargent in the National Portrait Gallery's collection. Working from paintings of other artists is a time-honoured way of learning to draw: Sargent himself copied paintings by artists such as Tintoretto and Velazquez. Lizet will introduce you to the basics of drawing a portrait, and will cover which materials to use, how to get started, the fundamentals of light and shade and how to achieve a likeness. John Singer Sargent was the leading portrait artist of his generation. In 2015, the NPG held the critically acclaimed exhibition "Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends", which in turn inspired Julian Barnes's book "The Man in the Red Coat".
