For this week's 1-hour portrait session, Luca will be looking at how to use masses of colour to draw a portrait of model Angus. Materials used: Colour pencils (Faber-Castell Polychromos). In this 1-hour portrait session, tutor Luca works from a pose by model Angus, exploring a mass-first approach to coloured pencil on dark blue-grey toned paper.
You&rsquo;ll start with a loose block-in before gradually building the portrait through layers of colour and value. Luca keeps the shadows simple, using changes in pressure, soft edges, and subtle colour shifts to create form rather than relying on outlines. Cooler reds and greys are woven throughout to bring the palette together, while carefully placed lights and dark accents help draw attention to the features.
The portrait is refined gradually, lifting and layering colour rather than adding lots of detail, with the nose highlight kept as the brightest focal point.
