You'll begin by constructing the facial planes before developing halftones and edges, with a focus on precision in the tones and blending. Materials used: Sanguine pastel pencil, sanguine stick or pastel stick on white paper. Blending with fingers and stumps.

In this 1-hour portrait session, Lizet works from a pose by model Rosmarie, demonstrating a step-by-step approach to drawing a three-quarter view portrait in sanguine. You'll start by blocking in the head with simple shapes, the centre line, and key landmarks before gradually developing the features and overall structure.
The session focuses on using blending and subtle shifts in tone to describe the planes of the head and create convincing form. Large tonal masses are established first, before refining the eyes, nose, mouth, and jaw with carefully placed accents and highlights. Throughout, the emphasis is on building the portrait gradually, keeping the structure clear while allowing soft transitions to create depth and volume.
