For this week's figure class, Lizet is doing four Quick Draw 15-minute poses focusing on making abstract marks. Starting with willow charcoal in the first pose, and then slowly expanding the palette with soft pastel. Model Ruby will be posing. Materials used: Burned Sienna, Sanguine, or similar coloured brown pastel pencil for the shadows, and a white pastel pencil for the highlights. On brown-toned paper. Optional: coloured pencil in the same brown colour, like for instance burned sienna or sanguine.

In this 1-hour figure session, you&rsquo;ll work through four 15-minute poses on a single sheet, beginning with wedge-sharpened willow charcoal to explore confident mark-making, varied pressure, and clear focal points.
Soft pastel is then layered over the charcoal, starting with a midtone before adding lights and warming the shadows. Rather than blending the light areas, the drawing is wiped back with a chamois and redrawn, creating a soft, glowing surface. The focus stays on value, edge variety, and the relationship between cast shadows and highlights, while less important areas are left loose and abstract.
