This is the third year we've sponsored a prize at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters' exhibition. This year, we're pleased to announce that Florence Yuqing has won the £2,000 cash prize for her watercolour painting 'Self: Familiar Yet Unknown':
Florence is a watercolour artist living in London. Her work explores the beauty of the flesh and the emotional and delicate nature of human beings. She has also recently exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Society of Women Artists, and won the prize for best small portrait at last year's RP annual exhibition. You can see more of her work on her Instagram account.
Neil Davidson, founder of Raw Umber Studios, said:
"Painting accurately in watercolours is incredibly hard, and I love the way Florence has both achieved a technical mastery in this medium, and also created a portrait with character and feeling. I particularly appreciate the asymmetries and rhythm that Florence has introduced in what may first seem like a simple front-facing portrait."
The RP's annual exhibition is on at Mall Galleries, London, until 17th May. You will also hopefully spot the works of a couple of Raw Umber regulars too!
