Join tutor Luca and model Abigail for a figure drawing session looking at a subtly twisted, foreshortened pose. The drawing begins with a simple envelope to set height and width, starting from the feet to establish the ground plane before dividing the figure into the main volumes of ribcage and pelvis. The centre line is tracked through the twist of the torso, while the head is built from a box with the brow line placed first and the features added after.
You will learn how to manage foreshortening by preserving widths and using cross form cues such as cast shadows. After the block in, the drawing moves into mass, mapping the shadow shapes and keying the darkest darks before white chalk is introduced to widen the value range. The focus stays on consistent values, soft and sharp edge control, and keeping reflected light within the shadow family. The drawing is finished through overall adjustments rather than chasing perfect likeness.

 This session mimics the structure of a traditional life drawing class. You will see one or more photographs to draw or paint from. Tutor Luca Indraccolo will be doing an online demonstration next to the video and will be giving hints and tips in the live chat. Once you have registered you will be sent a link to a private web page where you will be able to access the live stream at the date and time of broadcast. You will also have access to the video for 30 days after the session, and will be able to download the photographs used in the session so you can continue to work in your own time.
