Zorn palette portrait painting with Patrick Byrnes

In this four-day workshop, artists will employ a limited palette to make alla prima portrait paintings from the live model.

With just four pigments, we’ll discover how to achieve a surprisingly expansive range of colours through careful modulations of hue, value, and chroma, developing strategies for interpreting the sometimes elusive colors we perceive in human flesh. Comprised of both faster colour studies (ranging from 5 to 40 minutes), as well as a sustained 9 hour pose, this workshop is geared towards painters looking to improve their colour mixing, abbreviation, drawing, and paint handling.

Patrick will guide participants with daily demonstrations and in-depth personal critiques throughout each stage of the process — from creating a strong likeness with accurate drawing, to colour mixing, modeling form and finishing details. Munsell colour theory, cranial anatomy, materials, and the physics of light will also be discussed throughout each session.

Who is the tutor?
Patrick was born in Busan, South Korea in 1984 and raised in La Grange, Illinois. He earned his undergraduate degree in Art History and English from the University of St Andrews in 2006. Patrick moved to New York in 2010 to train under Jacob Collins at Grand Central Atelier. Following the completion of his studies in 2014, he worked as an instructor of painting and drawing in the atelier’s full and part time programs.
