Matthijs: An online portrait drawing session

Join Lizet for this week’s 1- hour portrait session with model Matthijs, working through three 20-minute poses: front, profile and three-quarter view. Using a waxy coloured pencil on white paper, you’ll focus on constructing expressive faces with clear structure before developing the drawing through light and shadow.

Lizet will break the head down into simple landmarks and proportions, looking at the centreline, placement of the eyes, nose, mouth, jaw and ears. You’ll also explore how changes around the brows, eyelids, cheeks, nostrils and mouth help communicate expression.

As each pose develops, you’ll use the side of the pencil for softer areas of shading and the point for sharper edges and details, keeping the hair simple so the focus remains on the face.

Materials:

• A4 white paper
• Waxy coloured pencil in dark green or dark purple

This session mimics the structure of a traditional life drawing class. You will see one or more photographs to draw or paint from. Tutor Lizet Dingemans will be doing an online demonstration next to the video and will be giving hints and tips in the live chat.

Once you have registered you will be sent a link to a private web page where you will be able to access the live stream at the date and time of broadcast. You will also have access to the video for 30 days after the session, and will be able to download the photographs used in the session so you can continue to work in your own time.
