Mastercopy of Lucy Kemp-Welch: An online figure drawing session

Join Lydia for this 1- hour master copy session, recreating a charcoal study of a horse’s head by Lucy Kemp-Welch. Working with Nitram charcoal on white paper, you’ll begin by blocking in the main head and neck mass at a dramatic angle, before locating key landmarks such as the cheek, nasal bridge, muzzle, nostril, lips and chin groove.

Lydia will demonstrate how to softly mass the shadows, add a light halftone dusting to unify the drawing and suggest the softness of the horse’s coat, and integrate the bridle through simple light and shadow shapes. You’ll also look at the use of sharp and lost edges, finishing with a few carefully placed accents.

Alongside the drawing, Lydia will introduce Kemp-Welch’s life and work, looking at her close observation of horses, her habit of working from life, and the way she treated them as individual characters rather than generic subjects.

. High quality images, great lighting and tuition from a professional artist mean this is a great way to hone your skills. This session mimics the structure of a traditional life drawing class. You will see one or more photographs to draw or paint from. Tutor Lydia Cecil will be doing an online demonstration next to the video and will be giving hints and tips in the live chat.

Once you have registered you will be sent a link to a private web page where you will be able to access the live stream at the date and time of broadcast. You will also have access to the video for 30 days after the session, and will be able to download the photographs used in the session so you can continue to work in your own time.
