For this week’s 1- hour portrait drawing session, join Lizet with model Will as she explores sculpting the face using layers of coloured pencil over willow charcoal, looking at the textural differences between the two. We’ll focus on how light falls across the forms of the face and how to handle those transitions on grey toned paper.

Join Lizet for a 1-hour portrait drawing session focused on building the head from big masses through to refined detail, looking closely at the fall off of light from a top left source. We&rsquo;ll begin by blocking in the main shapes with willow charcoal, placing the hat, beard and key shadow areas before gradually developing the features. Black and white coloured pencils are layered over the charcoal to sculpt the forehead, nose, cheeks and mouth with smooth transitions. The focus is on contrast and edge control, keeping some areas soft and others sharper so the eye knows where to look, while lifting texture into the beard and hat for variety.

 This session mimics the structure of a traditional life drawing class. You will see one or more photographs to draw or paint from. Tutor Lizet Dingemans will be doing an online demonstration next to the video and will be giving hints and tips in the live chat.
