Winner of Raw Umber Image Prize 2024 Announced
Wednesday 22 January, 2025
In its second year, we asked people to draw or paint one of the images from our reference image library.
We had over 1,000 entries from some 350 artists and the quality of work was outstanding. We're pleased to announce that this year's winner is Taylor Tynes with her painting of Abigail:
Taylor wins a £1,000 cash prize and feature in an upcoming issue of Artists & Illustrators Magazine.
Lizet Dingemans, Raw Umber's Head of Art, said "Raw Umber's ethos has always been about bringing the skills of realism to a wider audience. The techniques we teach have been passed down generations of artists. We feel this work exemplifies these qualities. It is well drawn, structured and has a good likeness. But great art needs more than just technique. In this painting, the juxtaposition with the abstract shapes in the background and the thought out composition gives it a contemporary feel."
Taylor Tynes is an oil painter based in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Upon receiving her BFA in 2016 from the University of South Carolina she moved to Salt Lake City to study drawing at the Hein Atelier of Traditional Art. She has since been exhibiting work across the United States. Tynes draws influence from her day to day life and is interested in continually exploring the relationship between representational art and abstract design, both being a means to arrive at capturing the essence and distinctive qualities of her subject matter.
Taylor said "One of the best things about being an artist in the 21st century is the access that we have to online resources. Schools like Raw Umber Studios help to foster creativity by allowing artists all around the world access to high quality reference photos. I cannot overstate how vital online resources and education have been to my own practice and career."
