Limited Palette Portraits with Charlie Pickard

Learn to paint alla prima portraits from life with a limited palette, in this intensive 3-day master class with artist Charlie Pickard.

What can I expect?

In this exciting three-day course, under the tuition of Charlie Pickard, students will be introduced to oil painting through three limited palettes designed to build their understanding of colour mixing and design, tackling the most challenging and important academic subject to master: the alla prima portrait.

Students will have the opportunity to study a model from life for three separate one-day portrait poses, painting each pose for a total of six hours per day. Students will be taken through a different palette each day, allowing them to tackle new colour dimensions with each new palette. These three dimensions of value, chroma and hue, lie at the core of all painting and a thorough and individual investigation of them will help any painter, beginner or professional.

Critiques will be focused on achieving a high level of academic accuracy, building a strong foundation that will aid in all further artwork. Charlie Pickard will also demonstrate a painting alongside students, using a direct painting method.
