Portrait Painting with Rupert Alexander

Venue:

  • November 16, 2020 - November 19, 2020
    10:00 am - 5:00 pm

This 4 day course is a rare opportunity to study closely with one of the UK’s foremost portrait painters.

Born in London in 1975, Rupert Alexander studied at Chelsea College of Art, the Florence Academy of Art and Charles H. Cecil Studios. He has painted the portraits of many prominent figures in Britain, and when, at the age of 23, he painted HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales for the Royal Warrant Holders Association he became the youngest artist to paint the British Royal Family since the 18th Century. His portrait of the Queen, in particular, garnered widespread press attention and critical acclaim, as did his portrait of the eminent mathematician Sir Andrew Wiles, which was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in 2015. His work hangs in public and private collections worldwide. Rupert is also a regular exhibitor at the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

This is one of our most intense and personalised workshops. With a maximum of 6 students and 2 students per model, you will receive detailed and customised tuition from Rupert over the course of four days. Working using the sight-size technique, you will complete a life-size head and shoulders portrait. Along the way, you will learn:

  • A repeatable, structured process for painting the portrait from life
  • The importance of drawing, values, edges and colour
  • The use of expressive brushwork to bring your paintings to life
  • The importance of gesture and structure in portraiture

To get the most out of this workshop, we highly recommend you have at least some experience in painting in oils.

A materials list will be circulated nearer the time. If you have any questions, please see our frequently asked questions or contact us.
